Molting Season: A Time of Transformation at Metis

This summer in Maine, I met an extraordinary creature: Neptune, a rare cotton-candy lobster whose uniquely patterned shell makes him one in 100 million. Like the blue jay who molts in late summer, shedding old feathers to make way for new ones, Neptune must periodically shed his shell to grow. During this time of transformation, both creatures might feel vulnerable, retreating to safe harbors. Yet this period of change isn't a time of loneliness—it's a time of magic, of creation, of becoming something stronger and better suited for the challenges ahead.
As I reflect on Metis's journey since I first shared our vision of bringing balance back to healthcare, I'm reminded of this natural cycle of renewal. Today, we're emerging from our own kind of molt, a rebranding filled with clarity and purpose. Our mission remains unchanged: to enable joyful, sustainable healthcare in every community. But our path forward is now crystallized through two distinct offerings: Hive, our healthcare financial operating system, and Terra, our coaching-based consulting service.
The bee remains our symbol, reminding us of a fundamental truth captured by Marcus Aurelius: "What injures the hive injures the bee." This wisdom runs deeper than ever in our work. At Metis, we understand that cross-pollination of ideas is quietly powerful—everyone has something to teach, everyone has something to learn. This principle guides both our technology and our human-centered approach.
Last summer, a mentor doctor understood the audacity of what we're aiming for and asked: "Why not us, why not now?" Indeed.
